The Atlanta Falcons have been able to turn a concern into a major strength.
The Atlanta Falcons are headed into a huge game this weekend against the Chicago Bears where they will try to earn what would be one of the most significant wins of the last couple years.
With both starting quarterbacks returning, this is a matchup for Atlanta which is a major measuring stick against one of the best teams in the NFC and a team who accomplished last season what the Falcons would like to accomplish now. The Bears are still a contender with Caleb Williams on the field, and while Atlanta has shown flashes, they are still laying the foundation for the new era.
In this game, the focus from most is going to be on the quarterbacks, but the Falcons have a serious strength on this roster that not many gave attention to going into the year. After the sudden retirement of Kaleb McGary, many folks even worried the offensive line could become a liability. Instead, it has once again been one of the strengths of the team and one of the best in all of football.
PFF Stats Reveal Falcons Among Lowest Pressure Rates in Football
When it comes to folks getting after the quarterback, many of the sacks the Falcons have allowed to this point in the season have been on the passer himself rather than poor blocking. Atlanta's 19.1% pressure rate allowed places them third in all of football.
Fascinatingly, McGary's replacement in Jawaan Taylor -- who was expected to be a huge downgrade at right tackle -- is currently top-five in football among offensive tackles with a 92% pass blocking win rate according to ESPN metrics.
The strength of the line has really showed in the run game, but when Penix is on the field, the quarterback is rarely going down. A significant part of this is an ability from Penix to get rid of the football, but doing it from a clean pocket is going to make things a whole lot easier on any quarterback.
If the offensive line can keep up this level of play and Penix can stay on the field, this offense is going to have a significant chance of experiencing success week in and week out. This starts this week with a massive opportunity against a defense that has been vulnerable at times this year.
The Falcons need to win in the trenches to win games, and right now, they are doing exactly that.
