The Atlanta Falcons will face the New Orleans Saints on Monday Night Football in a historic Week 4 matchup honoring the 20th anniversary of the iconic “Domecoming” game. With Michael Penix Jr. and Kevin Stefanski leading the way, Atlanta hopes to make a statement in primetime.
The Atlanta Falcons will be in primetime three times this upcoming regular season, but one certainly stands out among the rest. On Thursday, the NFL celebrated its annual schedule reveal show, and the Falcons will play just once on Monday Night Football. That one game will be a matchup against the New Orleans Saints, commemorating the 20th anniversary of the historic "Dome-coming" game in 2006.
The game marked the first contest played inside the Superdome since 2004 after the stadium sustained major damage from Hurricane Katrina. In what became one of the most emotional moments in National Football League history, the New Orleans Saints defeated the Atlanta Falcons 23–3 in a game widely viewed as a symbol of New Orleans' recovery and resilience following the disaster.
Because of the emotion surrounding the night and its significance to the city, the matchup became known as the "Rebirth" game and "Domecoming." It comes at an interesting time for the upcoming Saints squad as well, as they are looking to make a strong push forward under second-year head coach Kellen Moore and potentially find an answer at quarterback for the first time since Drew Brees retired, in the promising Tyler Shough.
However, "Rebirth" perfectly suits what the Falcons are looking to accomplish under Matt Ryan's leadership, newly signed head coach Kevin Stefanski at the helm, and a hopefully healthy Michael Penix Jr. The game in week 4 could certainly be a turning point for a franchise once again, but this time it may swing towards Atlanta.
The two teams also commemorated this event at the 10-year mark in 2016, when the Falcons took care of business 45-32. It was also the year the Falcons found themselves battling the New England Patriots for the Lombardi Trophy in the infamous Super Bowl LI.
Could this be the statement game the Falcons need to prove they are turning a corner? The game is scheduled to take place in New Orleans on October 5th, with kickoff set for 8:15 PM EDT.
