The Atlanta Falcons are going to be asking more from this young star.
The Atlanta Falcons are just a couple of weeks away from training camp and fans getting their first look at what this edition of the team is going to look like headed into year one of the Kevin Stefanski era.
Of course, every year there is going to be coaching staff and roster turnover, but in a period where there has been so much change, the Falcons already have some franchise cornerstone players who were in the building previously. Much of that conversation -- and contract negotiation rumors and deals -- have revolved around the offensive weapons, but the young defense has some excitement as well.
One of those pieces is young pass rusher Jalon Walker, who quietly had a very strong rookie year after being drafted in the first round last year. According to Atlanta defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich, Walker is going to be asked to do a whole lot more than just rush the quarterback this year.
Ulbrich Offers Insight Into New Role for Walker
"We are going to need to become better in everything he does — whether it is pass rush, edge setting at the line of scrimmage, small role off the ball, coverage, blitz. We are going to ask him to do a lot," Ulbrich said via Falcons.com before comparing his role to what Kaden Elliss did last year.
"What we had asked Kaden to do, I had never been around anything like that before in the past. There were days when he was an outside backer, days when he was a defensive end, days he was an inside backer, days he was — in some ways — a nickel. That's hard to replace. Jalon is up to the task, and Jalon is going to bring his own flavor to it, too."
Ulbrich went on to talk about his attitude and ability being infectious to the rest of the team, an ability to make everyone around him better. Having someone like that along the defensive line could take this unit to the next level and go from exciting young unit to one of the best in football very quickly.
A guy like Walker, who is not only a wrecking ball on the field but has the exact right attitude off it as well, is exactly the type of piece that made the job so attractive for Stefanski to take. Once camp does begin here at the end of the month, he's a name fans are going to most look forward to getting a chance to see.
