The Atlanta Falcons are headed into their second game now after an offensive disaster in Week 1's defeat to the Pittsburgh Steelers. With the game against the Carolina Panthers now looming, Atlanta is running out of time to decide what they are going to do at quarterback in Week 2.

While the situation with Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr. remains a mystery, a wild report this week from Adam Schefter puts the spotlight on just how dysfunctional things may be getting here. Penix was fully cleared with still weeks to go in training camp, but he and the team have decided to hold him out to allow him to continue recovering physically and mentally despite his practicing fully.

Now, it seems that is way more on the side of Penix rather than the team. Schefter says that there is no real timeline here and that the team does not actually know when the lefty will be ready to go.

"The way it was described to me over the weekend was the Falcons didn't know if it would be another week or another month," Schefter said.

The way Schefter is reporting, it sounds like Penix is the one making the decision here entirely without any input from the team. Given the fact that team doctors cleared him now almost a month ago, it seems absurd that Penix can simply decide he is not ready with no indication of when he may be ready.

Atlanta is in a complete quarterback mess right now, and their third-year first round pick is deciding he simply does not want to play yet. While Penix deserves some grace due to his previous knee injuries and it's at least somewhat understandable, this is a little bit absurd that he seems to be making the call solely on his own.

Even though Kevin Stefanski has not ruled Penix out from playing in Week 2, this report certainly does not make it seem like that is a real possibility right now. If that is the case, it would likely be Cooper Rush once again despite the way he struggled in the first game of the season.

As for Penix, it's anyone's guess at this point. This situation does not seem to be moving in a positive direction though, and things could get worse here before they get better.
