The Atlanta Falcons have a bright young man in Michael Penix Jr., and he has showed that through this process.
The Atlanta Falcons are going to be getting started with the regular season before fans know it, and the quarterback situation has been one of the main talking points surrounding the team.
Though there was much talk headed into training camp on the quarterback battle, the health of Michael Penix Jr. has prevented a true competition, which has likely allowed Tua Tagovailoa to grab the edge. Penix of course did not play in Friday's preseason opener against the Denver Broncos, and it remains a mystery when he will be fully cleared.
Despite all that and the fear of potentially losing his job, Penix has continuously kept the bigger picture in perspective and been able to focus not on rushing his way back to compete not at full strength, but controlling what he can control. This past week, Penix was asked about this, and his answer spoke volumes.
Penix Working on Clearing Mental Injury Hurdle
Penix spoke about the fact that even once his knee is fully healthy, he also needs to get over the mental hurdle of trusting it to do everything it can do, something which so many players have struggled with when returning from any sort of minor injury.
Talking about leaning on his faith as well as prior experiences with injuries, Penix is mature beyond his years and knows that he cannot worry about things that are out of his control.
Throughout the offseason, Penix has also said while of course he wants to start every game, he is of no benefit to the team if he comes back too early and hurts himself once again. Originally telling media at the start of camp it could be another four weeks -- which would place his return right before the start of the season -- the lefty has been great about helping the team in other ways and doing what he can on the practice field.
Penix would be the first to tell you he wants to be back and get another shot at being this team's franchise quarterback, but while others have made the mistake of rushing back, he is going to let himself completely heal both physically and mentally.
What that means for the start of the season for Atlanta at the quarterback position remains to be seen, but Penix will be back when he's ready and will not make the mistake of playing before that point.
