With Drake London locked up long-term, the Falcons can shift their focus to the rest of the core. The staff agrees Bijan Robinson is likely next in line for an extension, while Kyle Pitts remains the most intriguing decision facing Matt Ryan and Atlanta's new front office.
It was a huge week for the future of the franchise with the Falcons and Drake London reaching a massive contract extension.
As one of the biggest questions this offseason finally finds an answer, the staff discusses what could be next for Matt Ryan and the new regime in the front office.
1.) What is your initial reaction to the massive contract extension of Drake London?
Michael Brauner: London is a phenomenal player and seems to be a tremendous teammate as well, so I think this deal will pay off. Seeing him right near the top of the list of highest-paid guys in the league is a bit jarring, but Atlanta is betting on their guy, and I think this works out for both sides.
Christian Rauh: A great deal for both London and Atlanta. The contract didn't reset the market for wide receivers, which is good for the franchise trying to rebuild its identity. However, it's still respectable for London as the AAV is the highest in Falcons history. Got to love it when you can make it work for both sides.
Zac Blackerby: Worth it. Glad he's finally getting the attention he deserves.
2.) Now that London is locked in, should they add more weapons to the WR room? Or is it good enough for year 1 under Kevin Stefanski?
MB: Having a truly defined No. 2 behind London would be nice, but between Jahan Dotson, Olamide Zaccheaus, and the impact they hope Zachariah Branch could have, there's no shortage of weapons here when you include the impact Kyle Pitts and Bijan Robinson could have in the passing game as well. If they are going to make another move, it does not need to be at wide receiver.
CR: I still lean no. Unless they are sold on Branch being a big-time contributor by week 1, they are missing a solid number two behind London. Give whoever wins the quarterback battle a fighting chance at turning this franchise around in Stefanski's first year, and make a trade or sign another vet.
ZB: I think the weapons are solid. If anything, focus on the offensive line. I think this team just needs better coaching and scheme. Hopefully, Stefanski can help there.
3.) Who should Matt Ryan and the rest of the front office focus on next for an extension?
MB: Robinson is already likely on track to become one of the highest-paid running backs in NFL history, and another great year only raises that number even more. Locking him in now and betting on the superstar would be good business, but with Pitts set to hit free agency, he could take priority should the Falcons decide they want to keep him long term.
CR: Bijan is the obvious pick here; he's inevitable. The most interesting one is Kyle Pitts Sr. If a deal isn't struck with him by July 15, they may start fielding offers on a potential trade. If they want to lock in all three of London, Robinson, and Pitts, they should focus on him next.
ZB: Since day one, it seems like Atlanta has wanted Robinson to be the face of this franchise. I think they focus on him next.
