Atlanta Falcons 2026 Positional Room Preview: Safeties

The Atlanta Falcons have a terrific group of safeties in the secondary.

The Atlanta Falcons are headed into the season looking to find a way to get back on top of the division for the first time since 2017. If they are going to make that happen, their best players are going to have to be at their best.

Some of the groups on the team are stronger than others, but every player on the team needs to get to the next level in order for this team to accomplish its goals. Certain position groups are better than others, but the last line of defense in the secondary is an interesting one to look at as perhaps the strongest unit on the team

Here are the names you need to know at safety including arguably the best duo in all of the NFL.

Xavier Watts

Watts is one of the best young defensive backs in football, being nominated for Defensive Rookie of the Year last season after breaking out following his third round selection out of Notre Dame. If Watts can continue to get better, the sky is the limit for just how great he can be, and with the next name on this list next to him, it's a scary sight for opposing quarterbacks.

Jessie Bates III

Together, Watts and Bates form a dynamic duo the likes of which is the envy of every secondary in the league. Teams try for years to form the kind of duo Atlanta has on defense, with the All Pro Bates getting the chance to mentor a young Watts and make each of them better.

Bates is one of the leaders of this football team, and if he can continue to perform, this secondary is in great hands. The safety room goes beyond just this top two though.

Sydney Brown

Atlanta acquired Brown in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles during the draft and he instantly provides depth at a critical spot as well as being a young player with upside that they can mold to fit a new system. Brown may be used only in a rotational role unless someone gets hurt, but he is capable of helping wherever he's asked including special teams.

Jammie Robinson

After a standout collegiate career, Robinson has been unable to stick around with one team in the NFL and has spent time on practice squads with five total stints on different teams across just three years in the league. Now here for a second year, Robinson will have to fight to stick around, but he can play special teams and should have a great chance to earn a spot.

DeMarcco Hellams

Another guy who primarily sees action on special teams, Hellams has found a way to stick around since being drafted in the seventh round back in 2023. It would be a surprise to see him not on the roster, and perhaps he will get some snaps this season as well.
