Tua Tagovailoa faces a different challenge in Atlanta’s offense. Instead of speed-first targets, he’ll work with bigger weapons like Drake London and Kyle Pitts Sr. in Kevin Stefanski’s play-action system as the Falcons’ QB battle continues into camp.
The Atlanta Falcons new quarterback obviously has some adjustments to make this offseason.
After signing a contract and free agency with the Falcons, Tua Tagovilia is going to have a different type of wide receiver room in Atlanta compared to his last stop in Miami. When Tua was the starting quarterback for the Miami Dolphins, his top wide receivers were fast players like Tyreek Hill and Jalen Waddle. Atlanta's strength will give Tua bigger targets.
Star players like Drake London and Kyle Pitts Sr. will give a different vibe for Tua if he is to win the starting quarterback job this offseason. Tagliovolia was a dominant quarterback when healthy for the Dolphins and ranked among the league leaders in passing yards with those fast threats. Having the opportunity to have size to create mismatches and be in a system that focuses on play-action, something that Tua excelled at in Miami, might be a perfect recipe for a quarterback trying to revive his career.
Of course, we can't forget Bijan Robinson, who is arguably the best running back in the National Football League. He can win not only as a runner but as a receiver in this new offensive system.
Rookie wide receiver Zachariah Branch does adds speed to the wide receiver room, something that Tua is familiar with. If the veteran quarterback is to win this job, he should have all the weapons he needs to be successful and help the Falcons get back to the postseason for the first time since 2017.
As the quarterback competition continues between Tua and Michael Penix Jr., the biggest questions will be: how does one player stick out in the upcoming OTAs and training camp? Upcoming scrimmages, joint practices, and, of course, preseason games will be the biggest moments that matter the most to really decide who will be QB1 week one against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Speaking of those new quarterbacks like Tua, their opinion should matter as well. Who will be the starting wide receiver, Drake London, or trust more to become a top receiver in the National Football League? How will the offensive line respond to each quarterback in question, and of course, who creates the most confidence inside the huddle?
Kevin Stefanski, who's entering his first year as Falcons head coach, has said positive things about both quarterbacks. It could be one of the final decisions that are made before the Falcons kick off their season.
