The Los Angeles Chargers may finally have the right person to maximize Justin Herbert's skill set in new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel.

The Los Angeles Chargers made a critical hire for the future of their offense and elevation of quarterback Justin Herbert through a system that is built for success in the modern era. The Chargers are reportedly expected to hire former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel as their next offensive coordinator, who brings an innovative offense built around motion and spacing – fresh concepts the Los Angeles’ offense could really use. The allure of getting to coach Herbert was reportedly a factor in McDaniel’s decision, as he was also coveted by the Buccaneers and Eagles. McDaniel may be the coordinator who can get the Chargers over the hump and get past the Wild Card round.

McDaniel’s offensive schemes are known to confuse defenses while making things easy on his quarterback. His time with Tua Tagovailoa in Miami showed how his concepts can help a quarterback transform into an efficient passer. He isn’t coming to Los Angeles to work with a project – Herbert is a poised passer with great arm strength and size. He also brings in the use of motion and personnel to forced opposing defenses into revealing their coverage. It’s all much more modern, quarterback-friendly, and creative than the offenses that haven’t done much to elevate Herbert and his supporting cast.

Here is the full story from Chargers Roundtable writer Brad Magsam on McDaniel’s philosophies and how they will combat a lot of issues in Los Angeles’ offense.

In McDaniel’s first season with the Dolphins, the offense finished sixth in total yards. They led the NFL in total offense in 2023, while Tagovailoa led the league with 4,624 passing yards. However, the offenses weren’t enough to get over the hump, with McDaniel going 0-2 in the postseason. He will look to get his first win for both himself and Herbert as he transforms the system.
