Anton Harrison’s injury against the Eagles on Sunday, but head coach Liam Coen offered a glimpse of hope regarding the Jaguars left tackle.
When Jacksonville Jaguars left tackle Anton Harrison was carted off the field Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles, it looked bad.
Really bad.
Harrison was quickly ruled out against the Eagles , usually not a good sign for an injury. The team labeled it a knee injury, but there was plenty of online concern about a possible season-ending Achilles injury.
The fourth-year tackle, who made the switch to the left side this year after spending his first three seasons as Jacksonville’s starting RT, went down with a non-contact injury, adding to the fear that he could miss the rest of the season.
Harrison was given an MRI, but the Jaguars are still waiting for the results.
However, the reports that came out throughout the day on Monday offered a bit of hope that Harrison’s injury might not be as bad as originally feared.
Mia O’Brien reported that head coach Liam Coen preached patience if Harrison needs time before he is able to practice.
According to Coen, Harrison is “a little stiff,” and the team will “have to be patient” if Harrison cannot practice.
Those don’t sound like the words of a coach whose left tackle just suffered a season-ending injury.
Coen also said the team would elevate someone internally and wasn’t planning on signing anyone who would have to be flown to London if Harrison can’t play in Week 6 against the Houston Texans.
The Jaguars already made one roster move on Monday that required a transatlantic flight, signing long snapper Jacob Bobenmoyer to fill in for the injured Ross Matiscik.
Walker Little Stepped Up
After Harrison was injured on Sunday, Walker Little stepped up as his replacement, earning an 87.9 pass-blocking grade from PFF.
Little has had his struggles over the last couple of seasons, but he has plenty of starting experience. He started last season as the team’s starting LT but didn’t play well. He lost his job to Cole Van Lanen after being injured and never got it back when he returned.
With Van Lanen injured this offseason, the Jaguars naturally went back to Little to fill his spot, but he continued to struggle, causing the team to switch Harrison from right to left tackle.
However, Little’s experience made him a valuable swing tackle, and he was even named the starting LT on ESPN’s “All-Backup Team” this offseason.
Final Thoughts
It was very surprising to hear Coen talk as though there is hope Harrison wouldn’t be out very long.
While the results of the MRI will show the extent of his injury, anything that isn't a season-ending injury will be considered great news, as that is normally the end result of a non-contact knee injury.
Hopefully, Harrison avoided a worst-case scenario, and Tuesday provides a positive update.
