Former Jacksonville Jaguars receiver D.J. Chark announces he'll ride off into the sunset.
Former Jacksonville Jaguars second-round draft choice and veteran receiver D.J. Chark has decided to retire at 29.
On Friday, he posted his intention on Instagram.
"After much contemplation, I have decided to share a proper farewell as I navigate retirement. My journey began at the age of 7 when I signed up for football, unaware of the profound impact it would have on my life. I simply loved the sport and had the unwavering support of my parents. Years later I received the support of my wife, kids, family and thousands of fans!"
Seven years doesn't seem like a long time, but the average NFL career is much shorter -- 3.5 years overall and 3.5 for receivers, according to Statista's 2025 number -- so, Chark has beaten the odds. The owner of a professional resume that includes 216 catches and 3,100 receiving yards, Chark also notched 186 yards on seven career punt returns, good enough for a 26.6 yards-per-return average.
How Should Jags Fans Remember Chark?
Chark cut his teeth collegiately with the LSU Tigers. An impressive week at the Senior Bowl placed him on a few watch lists as he hauled in five passes for 160 yards and a touchdown. He never developed into what the Jaguars hoped when they invested second-round draft capital into him, but in 2019, he made a Pro Bowl.
A fractured ankle during Jacksonville's Week 4 game in 2021 would mark his final appearance in a Jaguars jersey. He made four more stops in four cities during the final four seasons of his NFL journey. In the Detroit Lions' 2022 season finale, he made just three receptions for 14 yards, but two moved the chains on 4th-down conversions to set up the game-winning touchdown.
That eliminated the Green Bay Packers from the playoffs. Moments like that won’t always pop when you scan a stat sheet, but they matter. They’re the kinds of plays teammates and fans remember: the clutch conversions and the willingness to step up when the moment demands it.
Lions fans will remember that season because it helped fuel thoughts that things were shifting. It was about impact, and in that moment, D. J. Chark delivered.
In Jacksonville, the best way to frame his career as a whole is that it wasn’t always linear. It didn’t always follow the script many expected after his Pro Bowl campaign, but it provided flashes of greatness. There were moments where his talent, effort, and professionalism showed up exactly when they were needed most.
From his breakout to the injury and the late-career stops, where he continued to contribute however he could, Chark proved he belonged. Maybe that’s the takeaway.
Not every career ends with a bronze Hall of Fame bust or gaudy stats. Some are defined by resilience, adaptability, and a quiet consistency that earns respect around the league. Chark’s journey checks some those boxes. Now, it has run its course, and there's nothing left to do except to wish him luck in whatever he decides to do next.
