Jacksonville secured offseason standouts Joey Aguilar and Jabbar Muhammad to the practice squad, along with several other talented young players.
While Sunday was a day of subtracting in the NFL, Monday has been a day full of adding.
All the players cut on Sunday and subjected to waivers were either claimed by another team or cleared waivers and were now free to sign with a team's practice squad.
The Jacksonville Jaguars have added 15 players to their practice squad so far. Teams may now sign up to 17 players for the PS, with an extra spot added for someone from the International Pathway Program.
Though they still have room for an additional two players, the Jaguars have already brought back several young players who made outstanding impressions throughout the offseason, both on offense and defense.
Offensive Players Who Looked Good
The Jaguars were able to bring back undrafted rookie quarterback Joey Aguilar, who started the offseason as QB4. A stellar preseason made Aguilar an intriguing developmental QB, and some wondered whether he could make Jacksonville's roster instead of the team risking losing him on waivers. Now that he is safely back on the PS, it looks like the team made the right call by giving that roster spot to someone else.
Running back J'Mari Taylor made a strong case for a roster spot. The undrafted rookie was the offensive star in Jacksonville's first preseason game. Taylor was a workhorse and scored the game-winning touchdown. However, he came up just short of the roster and is now on the practice squad. He appears to have a bright future.
Trebor Pena will be able to keep building chemistry with Aguilar on the PS. Their connection during the preseason was great. Unfortunately for Pena, the Jaguars are just too deep at wide receiver for him to make the team. He is a very interesting prospect.
WR Michael Wortham also made a late push, especially in the preseason finale. His gorgeous punt return for a TD was the highlight of the game.
Defense
Unfortunately, Jacksonville lost linebacker Yasir Abdullah on waivers to the Atlanta Falcons.
The Jaguars were able to bring back a couple of other very talented young defensive players to the PS.
Cornerback Jabbar Muhammad was the team's most shocking cut and is now back with the Jags. Muhammad had an outstanding offseason and was a real threat to be poached by another team. Luckily for Jacksonville, he wasn't. It wouldn't be a surprise to see him elevated to the active roster very soon.
The Jags also signed LB Jalen McLeod back to the PS. McLeod was a sixth-round pick last year, but missed his entire rookie season. He looked great in the team's final preseason game, registering seven tackles in the first half.
It would have been a shame if his career in Duval had been over before it ever had a real chance to begin.
Final Thoughts
The Jaguars were very fortunate to keep most of their best young guns who barely missed making the cut, especially Muhammad.
The PS also consists of QB Nick Mullens, who lost his QB2 job when the team traded for Quinn Ewers.
Offensive players joining Mullens on the PS will be receivers Austin Trammell and Tim Jones, as well as linemen Geron Christian Sr., Jimto Obidegwu, and Kilian Zierer, who earned the International Pathway spot.
Defensively, Jacksonville has also signed defensive tackle T.J. Bollers, safety Cam'Ron Silmon-Craig, and linebacker Jack Kiser.
With two spots remaining, the Jaguars' practice squad is already full of young, talented players on both sides of the ball.
