Fresh off a career-best season, the breakout receiver credits Liam Coen’s high-speed scheme for his success as he eyes a lucrative extension and a dominant fourth year.
Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Parker Washington is heading into his fourth season aiming to carry over his breakout momentum, and the offense, spearheaded by coach Liam Coen and offensive coordinator Grant Udinski, was key to his success.
Washington put together a career season, hauling in 58 receptions on 98 targets for 847 yards and five touchdowns. He blossomed into the lead receiver for Jacksonville's young receiving corps.
The former Penn State product is also in talks for a contract extension. Washington said he is excited to continue building on last season's success and become the best player he can be.
"I feel like I started to have more fun with it," Washington told News4Jax on Tuesday. "Just the process in itself, just working, and it's another opportunity to play the game I love. So, take advantage of that and just make the most of it."
Coen and Udinski, two offensive gurus, laid the foundation for the 5-foot-10 receiver's career year. Jacksonville runs a versatile offense, using multiple players to move around pre-snap and reveal what coverage the defense is running.
Washington said he loves the offense Coen and Udinski run. It allows the players to be free on the field and gives Lawrence various throwing targets.
"I love this offense, and I love how Liam (Coen) and Grant (Udinski) just tell us to go out there and just go be us and just have fun, you know, play fast," Washington said. "Attack each play with speed. Speed off the ball is what they would say, and I feel like it just lets us go out there and be free, and I feel like Trevor feels the same way."
Jacksonville's leading receiver recorded back-to-back games with 100 yards or more. He grabbed six receptions on 10 targets for 145 yards against the Denver Broncos, and caught eight receptions on 10 targets for 115 yards against the Indianapolis Colts.
The Jaguars' offense set Washington in a prime position to have a strong end to the season. He said to carry the momentum from last season into next season, he is staying detailed and intentional with his workouts.
"That's the mindset, you know?" Washington said. "I mean, it didn't start off with me having all these opportunities. So, I had to find a way to continue to get better."
Washington, Jacksonville's fifth-round pick, has become his team's leading receiver after three seasons. His ascension is a product of Coen and Udinski's offensive scheme and his work ethic, which put him in line for a lucrative extension.
