After a nightmarish sophomore slump, wideout Brian Thomas Jr. must reclaim his rookie dominance to prove he remains a vital piece of Jacksonville’s bright future.

Several players on the Jacksonville Jaguars have a lot to prove this season.

Can Trevor Lawrence continue his ascent to becoming one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL? Or will he be unable to match his stellar play during the second half of 2025?

Will running back Bhayshul Tuten be able to handle being the Jaguars' top option in the backfield? Or will the team regret letting Travis Etienne walk in free agency?

Can linebacker Ventrell Miller have the breakout season some are predicting? Or will he be unable to adequately fill in for All-Pro Devin Lloyd, who also left the Jags this offseason?

What about Travis Hunter? Will he become the superstar he seemed destined to be and justify the massive price Jacksonville paid to move up three spots to draft him?

While all of those players, and a few others, have a lot to prove, none of them has as much at stake this season as wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr., who was named as the Jaguar with the most on the line in 2026 by the staff at The Athletic.

BTJ Looking To Get Career Back On Track

Thomas Jr.'s struggles last season have been discussed at length, and BTJ is looking to get his career back on track in 2026. Thomas showed his immense talent as a rookie in 2024 and must prove his disappointing sophomore campaign was a fluke if he wants to convince Jacksonville he should remain a big piece of the team's future.

According to Jeff Howe, who made Jacksonville's pick for The Athletic, Thomas may have a difficult time returning to his rookie form.

"The 23-year-old receiver had a forgettable debut season with coach Liam Coen, catching 48 passes for 707 yards and two touchdowns in 14 games. That’s a nightmarish output compared to the 87 catches, 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns from his rookie season in 2024, especially as the Jaguars’ offense improved across the board around him. Thomas, a first-round pick under the previous regime, fell behind receivers Parker Washington and trade-deadline acquisition Jakobi Meyers down the stretch. With Travis Hunter likely to generate more usage and a reliance on tight ends, Thomas needs to find a way to make himself more consistently impactful."

Is Howe Right?

It's hard to argue that BTJ has the most of the line for the Jaguars this season, but is Howe right in his outlook for Thomas this season?

Although Meyers and Washington ended the 2025 season as Lawrence's most-trusted options, Jacksonville is likely to give BTJ every opportunity to regain his spot as WR1. Howe's assertion that Hunter will be more involved in the offense seems unlikely, as the second-year phenom will be primarily used on defense this season.

Thomas is a first-round talent whose talent is undeniable, and the Jaguars need him to be the player he was in 2024 if they want to go on a deep playoff run. Besides Lawrence, he may be Jacksonville's most important player in 2026.

Final Thoughts

There is no Jaguar with more on the line than Brian Thomas Jr. this season, both for the team's sake and individually.

If BTJ can prove he is the same player who made the Pro Bowl as a rookie, not only does Jacksonville have a legit shot at reaching the team's first-ever Super Bowl, but he will once again be thought of as one of the best receivers in the league.

Still only 23 years old, Thomas can show he is still one of the brightest young stars in the NFL with a bounce-back year. How he performs in 2026 will have a huge impact on the Jaguars' success this season and on how vital the organization views Thomas to its long-term future.
