An MVP finalist campaign and elite efficiency metrics prove Jacksonville’s $275 million investment is paying off as the star signal-caller climbs into the league’s upper echelon of quarterbacks.
The Jacksonville Jaguars raised a lot of eyebrows when they gave quarterback a five-year, $275 million contract extension in 2024.
Although Lawrence had yet to live up to the enormous hype that he came into the NFL with, Jacksonville remained a big believer in his talents and bet that he would soon reach his potential.
In 2025, Lawrence lived up to the hype and then some, catapulting himself into the upper echelon of NFL quarterbacks. He played the best football of his career over the second half of the season and was a finalist for NFL MVP.
As it turns out, the Jaguars are getting a pretty good return on their investment.
Duncan Day of Heavy.com wrote a fantastic piece on just how well Lawrence's play in 2025 outperformed his salary compared to other QBs in the league.
Jaguars Got Plenty Of Bang For Their Buck
Lawrence's career season gave the Jaguars plenty of bang for their buck.
Day shows how Lawrence matched up against other quarterbacks, both in terms of pay and production.
"Paid like a high-end starter, his $37.5 million cash payout ranks 12th among quarterbacks, while his $24 million cap hit ranks 14th, giving the Jaguars a manageable short-term number if his late-season surge carries over.
"Lawrence’s performance backed up his earnings, finishing with an 84.7 overall grade in 2025, eighth among 43 qualified quarterbacks. His 81.5 passing grade ranked seventh at the position.
"He also threw for 4,007 yards, 29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, a monster change from 2024, when Lawrence played only 10 games and threw for 2,045 yards, 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions."
Advanced analytics also shows a QB who played great.
"SumerSports had Lawrence at 60.67 total EPA and 0.09 EPA per play in 2025. In 2024, he was at 2.83 total EPA and 0.01 EPA per play. His success rate also climbed from 43.60% to 47.73%."
Lawrence got better as the year progressed, with PFF giving him a fantastic grade of 92.6 from Week 13 on, the highest of any QB.
The top overall pick from 2021 took a massive step forward in 2025, and his play carried the Jaguars to a 13-4 regular season and AFC South division title.
Final Thoughts
Lawrence's extension, once thought of as a very risky over-payment, now looks like a solid piece of business by the Jaguars.
With Patrick Mahomes' new deal with the Kansas City Chiefs resetting the QB market, Lawrence's contract may end up looking like chump change (at least for NFL QBs) in the near future.
The Jaguars have their franchise QB signed through 2030, giving the organization long-term stability at the game's most important position. As QB salaries increase over the next half-decade, Lawrence, who is already outperforming his contract, will only become more of a bargain.
