As the regular season looms, Liam Coen demands urgency and intensity from his players during the last week of the offseason.

There isn't much time left before the NFL regular season begins.

Whether players are hoping to make the Jacksonville Jaguars' 53-man roster, trying to earn significant playing time, or stars who need to make sure they are as sharp as possible for the season, there is only about a week left in the offseason.

Head coach Liam Coen wants more intensity and urgency from his players in this final week of practices before the real games begin. With only one more preseason game to go against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Coen is demanding that his players give their all during the remaining practices.

The Jaguars and Buccaneers are scheduled for a pair of joint practices on Tuesday and Wednesday before their preseason finale on Friday night. Coen said the goal is "just getting those guys a ton of reps."

Coen spoke with reporters after the team's practice on Sunday about the importance of this week's practices, as shared by Action Sports Jax.

“We won’t be in pads again until game week after this week… You gotta maximize these opps, and the continued continuity and chemistry is so important. Every time we step out here, there has to be real intentionality, and not just ‘okay, this is another training camp practice.’ That ain’t it anymore.”

Coen Praises Chris Rodriguez Jr.

The Jaguars have spent the last several months preparing for the season to begin. Hopefully, all that hard work pays off with a successful season.

Before the real fun starts, the Jaguars have one more week to get ready. Coen is looking for what he calls "real intentionality" from his players over this final week.

One player Coen specifically praised was running back Chris Rodriguez Jr., who is competing with Bhayshul Tuten for Jacksonville's top running back job. The battle for RB1 is still close enough that the team hadn't picked a starter before releasing its first unofficial depth chart.

After discussing what he is looking for from his players in practice, Coen went out of his way to mention Rodriguez and how he practiced exactly the way Coen wants.

"Chris Rodriguez, today, he practiced that way, and we gotta continue to get guys to do the same."

Being singled out by your head coach for doing things the right way is a great sign for any player, let alone one battling for a starting job. Were Coen's comments about Rodriguez a sign that the team's biggest free-agent addition is now in the lead for the RB1 role?

We will find out soon enough.

Final Thoughts

Everything the Jaguars have done over the past few months has been in preparation for the upcoming season. Now that the regular season is right around the corner, Coen is demanding that his players show the urgency and intensity in practice that is necessary to win games.

While starters won't play on Friday, they will have two days of joint practices with an actual opponent. As Coen mentioned, those practices are the last time the starters will be in pads that isn't in preparation for a real game.

How will the Jaguars' players respond to Coen's demands? With so many players still fighting for roster spots or their place on the food chain, I expect them to respond and practice exactly the way Chris Rodriguez Jr. did on Sunday.
