After only seeing four offensive snaps in Jacksonville's opener, Travis Hunter may be in Line For a greater offensive workload this Sunday.
One of the biggest questions heading into the Jacksonville Jaguars' season opener was how much two-way phenom Travis Hunter was going to play on offense.
Everyone knew for months Hunter was going to be used on defense full-time in his second season, a big departure from his rookie campaign, where he was primarily used at wide receiver.
After a knee injury limited Hunter to only seven games last year, the Jaguars decided he would focus on playing cornerback this season.
However, head coach Liam Coen was adamant that Hunter would continue to play offense, although he never gave an indication of exactly how often.
In Week 1's 34-10 dismantling of the Cleveland Browns, it wasn't much at all. Hunter only played a grand total of four snaps on offense, which he turned into one catch for eight yards and also had a carry for three more yards.
Admittedly, there wasn't much need for Hunter on offense against Cleveland. Still, only four snaps were probably fewer than anyone would have expected.
Going on the road in Week 2 to play the Denver Broncos will be a much tougher challenge for Jacksonville.
Coming off an embarrassing 31-10 defeat against the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday Night Football, the Broncos will be very motivated when they take the field against the Jaguars.
If Jacksonville wants to walk out of Denver 2-0, the team may need to utilize Hunter more as a weapon on offense.
Head coach Liam Coen mentioned the possibility of Hunter seeing an increase in touches this week, which was included in ESPN's Michael DiRocco's Week 2 mini-preview of the Jaguars-Broncos game.
"Hunter played only four offensive snaps in the opener against Cleveland, and coach Liam Coen said Hunter's role could be much bigger this week. 'You want to continue to do what we think is going to give us the best chance at winning throughout the course of the week,' he said. 'And if that's Travis getting more touches, then absolutely will [get him more touches].' -- Mike DiRocco"
Getting the ball into Hunter's hands more often is never going to be a bad idea. Having his playmaking ability on the field as a wide receiver is a great way to throw Denver's terrific defense off its game.
This game is a battle between two teams looking to finish atop the AFC standings this year. It should have a playoff-type atmosphere on Sunday.
One big play from either team could be the difference. Even if Hunter only ramps up his offensive usage to about 15 plays, it still greatly increases his chances of making that play for Jacksonville.
Final Thoughts
Whether Hunter being on the field for only four offensive snaps last week was by design or because the Jaguars jumped out to a big lead early is unknown. Probably a bit of both.
It seems like Hunter having a much larger offensive role this week is practically guaranteed. Will he be able to do with the increased opportunities?
If the Jaguars want to send Denver to an 0-2 start, they will need Hunter on both defense and offense this week.
