Tempers flared during a heated joint practice as Bhayshul Tuten and J'Mari Taylor dominated on the ground, showing that the Jaguars' run game could be better than expected.

Before the two teams meet on Friday for their second preseason game, the Jacksonville Jaguars and Carolina Panthers held a joint practice on Wednesday.

The atmosphere was intense. Tempers were almost as hot as the temperature, causing the teams to get into a few minor scuffles throughout the day.

The joint practice also gave the Jaguars a chance to catch up with former teammate Devin Lloyd, who left Jacksonville for Carolina as a free agent this offseason. Lloyd took some time to speak to reporters about his former team and predicted a big year from wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr.

On the field, the Jaguars had an impressive day. The red-zone offense was dominant, scoring touchdowns almost at will against the Panthers' defense. Both rookie tight ends, Nate Boerkircher and Tanner Koziol, found the end zone. They each added other impressive plays where they picked up plenty of yardage after the catch. Brenton Strange had a solid day as well.

Ironically, much of the success from Jacksonville's TEs came at the expense of Lloyd, whose elite coverage ability helped him earn All-Pro honors last season as a Jaguar.

However, nobody had a better day for the Jaguars than running back Bhayshul Tuten, who wowed the crowd and had Gus Logue of Big Cat Country exclaiming that one run in particular was the best he had ever seen from Tuten during any practice.

Undrafted rookie RB J'Mari Taylor also had a strong day. After carrying the offense to a comeback victory over the New Orleans Saints on Saturday, Taylor continued his push for a roster spot. With LeQuint Allen Jr. expected to be out with an injury for the remainder of camp, Taylor should be given even more opportunities to shine.

Quarterback Trevor Lawrence spoke with reporters about the fantastic day from his running backs, calling it "awesome." Shared by Action Sports Jax, Lawrence was quick to credit the Jaguars' stellar run defense, which the offense has to deal with every day in practice, for strengthening the team's rushing attack.

“It’s a testament to, one, our defense is really good against the run, so we’re that every day and sometimes it’s like running your head into a brick wall… Today, when you come out with that intensity, all the details are on point, and you come off the ball, now we’re seeing these creases hit a little bit more.”

“I think it’s just that iron sharpening iron in practice that’s really paying off. Still got a lot of work to do, but it was a much better run game today. It was awesome.”

If the running game can stack days as it did on Wednesday, perhaps it will begin to silence the doubters who have been questioning whether the team did enough to replace Travis Etienne Jr., who, like Lloyd, left the Jaguars in free agency.

Final Thoughts

Jacksonville's running game, Tuten in particular, had a tremendous showing during Wednesday's joint practice. If he can play like this during the regular season, he may become a star, which at least one prominent analyst believes he can be.

The Jaguars' backfield is looking more talented and deep as the regular season approaches. When healthy, the foursome of Tuten, Chris Rodriguez Jr., Allen, and now Taylor looks like they can all be trusted to contribute this season.

With a rushing attack like the one we saw Wednesday, there may be no ceiling to what this offense can accomplish this season.
