Taking a look at the top five takeaways from the Jacksonville Jaguars' 20-13 loss to the Denver Broncos.
The Jacksonville Jaguars traveled to Colorado to take on the Denver Broncos on Sunday afternoon, which ended up being a solid game, and with that said, the Broncos were able to pick up a 20-13 win.
On that note, let's take a look at the top five takeaways from the 20-13 loss for the Jaguars against the Broncos in Week 2.
1. The Secondary Struggles Against Speed
Early on, the Jacksonville defense was solid, but as the game wore on, the secondary had some problems against the speed of Denver and, in particular, against wide receiver Jaylen Waddle.
In this game, Waddle tallied eight receptions for 138 yards on 10 targets while averaging 17.3 yards per reception. Once quarterback Bo Nix got in rhythm, he and Waddle really got on the same page, which became very tough for the Jaguars to stop.
Heading into next week, the Jaguars must figure out a way to defend speed on the perimeter much better, otherwise opposing quarterbacks may continue to attack that weakness.
2. Parker Washington May Be the Clear No. 1 WR
For the second consecutive week, wide receiver Parker Washington was one of the top targets for quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
On Sunday against the Broncos, Washington totaled seven receptions for 98 yards on 12 targets, and when the Jaguars needed a play in the passing game, more likely than not, Lawrence looked to Washington to make that play.
Moving forward, it appears that Washington has asserted himself as the No. 1 receiver for the Jaguars and could have an opportunity to be one of the top receivers in the entire NFL.
3. Bhayshul Tuten Shows Promise on the Ground
On the offensive side, the Jaguars did a solid job on the ground and one player who really stood out was running back Bhayshul Tuten.
For the game, Tuten totaled 13 carries for 65 yards and one touchdown while averaging five yards per carry. When the Jaguars handed it off to Tuten, he made sure to take advantage, but after losing the lead in the second half, Jacksonville kind of got away from the run game.
As the Jaguars head into Week 3, it will be interesting to watch if Jacksonville emphasizes the run game more and if Tuten can help this team to maintain leads moving forward.
4. Trevor Lawrence's Tough Second Half Performance
In the first half of this game, Lawrence did a solid job of leading the Jacksonville offense to successful drives, however in the second half it was a different story.
During the second half, the Jaguars scored just 3 point which came on their opening drive out of halftime and after that, Lawrence threw an interception, kicker Cam Little missed a field goal, and on their final drive they punted. Against a solid Denver defense, Lawrence and the offense were not able to get the job done.
Next week, the Jaguars must find a way to be able to have success in the second half even against a good defense like the New England Patriots have, otherwise, second half struggles could become a consistent problem for Jacksonville.
5. The Defense Could Not Get a Stop Late
The Jaguars defense did a solid job for most of the game, however when Jacksonville absolutely needed a stop they could not get it.
Following the Jaguars' final offensive possession they needed to get the ball back, but they could not as they allowed Denver to have a 10 play drive that gained 59 yards and winded out the clock while only running the ball even though the Jaguars have one of the top rushing defenses in the NFL.
Throughout the rest of the season, Jacksonville must find a way to stop the run consistently over the course of games, but in particular late in games when they need to get off the field, because if they do not, it may become a problem and possibly cost them key games.
