After a quiet sophomore slump, Brian Thomas Jr. is revitalizing Jacksonville’s offense by building explosive chemistry with Trevor Lawrence and dominating the deep ball during offseason workouts.
Throughout the offseason workouts, the Jacksonville Jaguars' deep passing game has been a focus for not only the team, but also the media, with multiple highlights of long completions being shared.
Brian Thomas Jr., who is coming off a bit of a down year after bursting onto the scene as a rookie, has been the benefactor of many of these viral clips, looking much more in sync with Trevor Lawrence.
On Sunday, ESPN's NFL Nation named Thomas the biggest surprise of the offseason for Jacksonville thus far, noting his increased comfortability.
"In 2026, he has been the Jags' most impressive offensive player so far, and the chemistry between Trevor Lawrence and him -- especially on deep throws -- is the best it has been," ESPN's Michael DiRocco wrote. "He said a changed mindset and an emphasis on not overlooking small details in his preparation are the main reasons."
In 2024, Thomas had 87 catches for 1,282 yards and 10 touchdowns, ranking first among rookie receivers in yards and TDs, beating out his college teammate, Malik Nabers.
Thomas and Nabers formed one of the deadliest collegiate receiving duos of all time at LSU, combining for over 2,700 yards and 31 touchdowns during their junior seasons. Thomas led the country in touchdowns, with 17, while Nabers' SEC-leading 89 catches and 1,569 yards earned him All-American honors.
2025, however, was not as kind to Thomas, as he dealt with shoulder, wrist and ankle injuries throughout the season.
The rookie of the year finalist also struggled converting on his targets early in the year, catching just seven of his first 25 targets.
But he didn't allow the injuries to be an excuse for his dropped passes early in the year.
“The wrist is not an excuse,” Thomas told reporters. “I own the drops. I know I have to be better.”
Thomas fixed his drop problems as the year went on, closing out the season in promising fashion with a touchdown against the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Wild Card game, only his third of the season.
Now, entering his third year with Lawrence, the two seem to be clicking on another level.
Following the Jaguars' first OTA, head coach Liam Coen made sure to address his star wide receiver as a player to look out for.
"I think it's the chemistry between, you know, he and BT, first and foremost," Coen said. "Working on that chemistry. It was nice to see a great start to that today live and in person. I think those two have worked at it this spring, thus far throughout phase one, phase two, and then showed up in a nice way today."
With the midseason addition of Jakobi Meyers, Parker Washington's development, and the additions to Jacksonville's tight end room, Thomas should be a focal point of a deadly offensive attack next season.
