According to a report by ESPN, the Jacksonville Jaguars have traded their 2028 sixth round draft pick to the Miami Dolphins for quarterback Quinn Ewers on Saturday. 

Ewers played only one preseason game this year, when the Dolphins took on the Washington Commanders on August 14th. Ewers went 1/8 for 27 yards, with an interception, and he was also sacked. Miami lost the game 20-7. The Dolphins added former Tennessee Titans and Green Bay Packers quarterback Malik Willis this off-season, signing him to a three-year $67 million deal in March. Miami's quarterback room had featured Ewers, Willis, Cam Miller and Mark Gronowski. 

Miller was drafted by the Las Vegas Raiders in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft out of North Dakota State, and signed to Miami after spending his rookie season on the Raiders' practice squad. 

Ewers had been competing for the backup quarterback in Miami with Miller and Gronowski, but based on how the preseason went, he seems to be one of the odd ones out now that he's in Jacksonville. 

Last year the Jaguars went 13-4 and they were ranked 11th in Total Offense. They have a starter in Trevor Lawrence who had 4,007 passing yards and 29 touchdowns to 12 interceptions. Jacksonville would have a decent backup option with Ewers, who will be QB2 on the depth chart. Ewers is mobile with arm talent but still has room for improvement in his game. 

The Miami Dolphins drafted Ewers in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL Draft out of Texas. Ewers was mainly serving as a backup to Tua Tagovailoa, and he even got to start three games for the Dolphins in his rookie season, playing in four. His first bit of game action was against the Cleveland Browns in Week 7, throwing for 53 yards. His first was against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 16, going 20/30 with 260 yards and two interceptions in a 45-21 loss. 

Things improved for Ewers in Week 17 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he threw for 172 yards and two touchdowns on 14/22 attempts in a 20-17 win. But then things went back down in Week 18, as the Dolphins lost 38-10. In that contest, Ewers completed 16 of 23 passes for 137 yards and a touchdown and an interception to close out the year. 

Ewers played college football for the Texas Longhorns from 2022-2024, after spending time at Ohio State the year prior. Ewers had a great college career throwing for 9,128 yards and 68 touchdowns to 24 interceptions. 

Now Ewers joins the Jaguars with quarterbacks such as Trevor Lawrence and others. With Ewers finding a new home in Jacksonville, he can learn under head coach Liam Coen and improve upon his skill set.
