Parker Washington has looked like one of the Jacksonville Jaguars' most dynamic players throughout the offseason. Will he and the team come to an agreement on an extension before the season starts?
The Jacksonville Jaguars' wide receiving corps has quickly transformed into one of the deepest groups in the AFC, with talent flooded throughout the room.
Brian Thomas Jr. and Parker Washington project as Jacksonville's top-two weapons, while Travis Hunter, Jakobi Meyers, and tight end Brenton Strange provide additional firepower for starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence to work with.
Washington, who some analysts have hailed as the Jaguars' lead receiver, had a breakout season last year, recorded 58 receptions for 847 receiving yards and five touchdowns during the regular season en route to a strong performance in the playoffs.
On Tuesday, Jaguars General Manager James Gladstone was asked about Washington and what he has shown this offseason.
"Theres a ton that he showcases on a daily basis on who he is and how he operates," Gladstone said.
He went on to say that Washington's actions speak to his character and work ethic, while assuring media that he will not shy away from attempting to extend his young receiver throughout the season.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler recently reported that the two sides are working to get a deal done before Week 1, but said that an extension is not "imminent."
If Washington is not locked down, he will play out the final year of his rookie contract this season before hitting the open market next offseason.
All indicators point towards Washington wanting to stay in Duval, but another strong season could increase his price tag and put the Jaguars in a difficult spot.
This offseason, Washington has been hailed as one of the hardest workers on the team, with his strict morning regiment being a topic of discussion throughout training camp.
"I wake up at 4:30, leave by 4:50, get here anywhere between 4:55 and 5, and then I’m starting right when I get here," Washington described. "Quick change, right on the FaceTime with my trainer for prep, and then if we have our lift, right to the lift."
Washington talked about how this can be taxing before training camp begins for the day, but he said "if you want to take it to the next step and go to the next level, and what I’m trying to do, I have to be able to do that each day."
The former Penn State standout has shown a real connection with Lawrence in camp and at practices against other NFL teams, serving as the subject of multiple social media clips.
While extending Washington is not a rush, playing the waiting game is definitely a risk.
It will be interesting to monitor how the Jaguars' front office decides to act on Washington's expiring contract as the season kicks off.
