Liam Coen is limiting Travis Hunter’s physical workload, prioritizing the two-way star’s recovery while maintaining his dual-threat mental preparation.
Two-way star Travis Hunter remains one of the most defining storylines of the Jacksonville Jaguars offseason, but head coach Liam Coen is drawing a strict line in the sand regarding his young star's OTA workload.
While the outside world continues to roar with the Hunter debate, whether wide receiver or cornerback suits him well, Coen wants his sophomore sensation not to burn himself out practicing full-time for both sides every day.
That is why Coen explicitly stated that he will only be practicing either on the offense or on the defense on a particular organized team activities day.
“We won't put him in that situation to have him do that, although I'm sure he'd probably want to," Coen said, per John Oehser.
Travis Hunter's Injury One of the Main Reasons
Hunter is just rounding around the final corner of his recovery from the isolated lateral collateral ligament (LCL) injury he suffered last season in his right knee. His otherwise smooth-going rookie campaign was cut short because of it, and he only appeared in seven games last season.
Coen exercising a highly conservative approach with Hunter’s OTA workload is the only logical play, especially since thetwo-way phenom will be buzzing to cut loose on both sides of the ball.
If left to his own devices, Hunter's relentless competitive drive could easily backfire, leaving him prone to early burnout or a devastating setback on his repaired knee.
However, Coen doesn’t want Hunter to lose out on crucial information and team resources on both sides either. That’s why he’s allowing him to sit in both defensive and offensive meetings every day, just not the physical workouts.
Hunter to Attend Meetings on Both Offense and Defense
"He still meets defensively every day that he's on offense, so he's getting the mental part of it and is able to catch up on some of the communication, some of the corrections off the film from the defensive side of the ball," Coen said. "He's getting a lot of the mental and it would probably be unfair to put him out on the grass and do both and ask him to go do that and see success."
That said, with the season soon approaching, Coen might have to remove the restriction soon and allow Hunter to practice and play on both sides.
"In season, he's going to probably have to, just because it's the way practices are kind of organized," the Jaguars head coach explained. "He's definitely going to have to do that. I envision maybe a third-down day in season where he's playing receiver, but he's also going to have to go get some reps on defense and be able to do some of those things. It will come up, absolutely."
