After a blistering 2025 finish, the Jaguars quarterback enters a new season trading mental exhaustion for mastery, redirecting his focus from learning plays to dismantling opposing defenses.
Liam Coen’s breakout season set the bar too high for the Jaguars in 2026. But inside the building, Trevor Lawrence isn't sweating the external pressure.
For the franchise quarterback, finding success in Year 2 comes down to simple comfort in the system.
“Just having the system down, there’s so much more confidence when you step on the field that we know what we’re doing,” Lawrence said, via the team’s website. “It (Coen’s offense) is just a lot more stressful mentally. I had to get used to that.”
Lawrence's Familiarity with Coen's Offense Changes Everything
Lawrence was absolutely on fire over the final month and a half last season, leading the Jaguars on an eight-game winning streak to finish 13-4.
During the final six games alone, he accounted for 19 touchdowns against just a single turnover, pushing himself right into the MVP conversation.
When Lawrence talks about the "stress level being so much lower" because he has the system down, this is the concrete result.
Last year, it took two months for him to stop thinking and start playing. Knowing Coen’s offense this season means the Jaguars get the December 2025 Lawrence from Week 1.
“Now, I feel so much more comfortable and the stress level is so much lower. The attention to detail is super high, though. It’s not like I’m relaxing out there, but as far as the confidence and knowing what I’m doing … now I’m paying attention to exactly how the defense is responding.”
Last year, Coen's scheme demanded massive mental heavy lifting from Lawrence, forcing him to master complex protections and quick-game lookups. Now that those mechanics are muscle memory, Lawrence explicitly mentions he isn't "relaxing," but rather redirecting his focus to the defense.

Plus, Lawrence is also thrilled with how their communication and timing compare to this point last year, when everything was brand new.
“What we’re getting to in our system, the timing, guys being on the same page of protection, the communication up front … all that stuff is so much further along because we’re a year in the system. I was very happy with the work we got done.”
For a quarterback who was left scrambling from a wildcard appearance from the Buffaloes, this is exactly the type of offseason he needs to manipulate safeties with his eyes and protect the football.
Fortunately, Lawrence has also been working on his chemistry with wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr., making it incredibly easy for the Jaguars to set the tone from their first game this season.
