With Crosby off the board, Jacksonville pivots to elite pass rushers Trey Hendrickson and Jaelan Phillips. Can they land their next defensive star?

One of the biggest trade targets in the NFL was taken off the market Friday, as the Baltimore Ravens sent two first-round draft picks to the Las Vegas Raiders for superstar defensive end Maxx Crosby.

The Jacksonville Jaguars were rumored to be one of the teams eyeing the two-time All-Pro edge rusher, according to The Athletic's Diana Russini, but could not match the lucrative package offered by the Ravens.

NFL insider James Palmer on Friday reported, "The Jaguars were also in on Maxx Crosby, but the lack of a first-round pick from the Travis Hunter trade hurt their chances. But they were a team that wasn’t talked about much, but certainly was in the mix.”

Multiple premium defensive linemen remain on the market as of Saturday. Here are the two top.

Trey Hendrickson

Hendrickson has become one of the most ruthless edge defenders in the NFL, but has seemingly grown unhappy with his situation with the Cincinnati Bengals. He was limited to seven games this season due to injury, but still recorded four sacks.

In 2024, Hendrickson broke out, leading the league with 17.5 sacks and 65 quarterback pressures. As the franchise-tag deadline came and went on Tuesday, so did the Bengals' chances of retaining Hendrickson.

Shortly after, ESPN's Adam Schefter joined the "Pardon My Take" podcast, where he dropped a hint about Hendrickson's preferences. Hendrickson owns property in Ponte Verde, Florida, roughly 30 minutes east of Jacksonville.

However, as Schefter noted, the Jaguars would likely need to work through some cap issues to meet Hendrickson's high asking price.

Hendrickson also has the endorsement of Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, who told reporters last May, "He deserves to get paid what he wants, what the market is."

Jaelan Phillips

Landing with the Philadelphia Eagles on Nov. 3 last season, Phillips is likely on the move again. Phillips was dealt by the Miami Dolphins just before the trade deadline, then notched 25 tackles and three sacks with Philly.

Since being drafted in the first round in 2021, Phillips has accumulated 28 sacks, proving to be a consistent difference-maker on the line. According to ESPN's Matt Bowen, Phillips is the third-best free agent still on the market, crediting his "improved range to the ball."

He would also likely come as a much cheaper acquisition compared to Hendrickson, as Phillips' market value, projected at $17.3 million per year, is roughly $8 million less than what it would take to net the former Bengals star, according to Spotrac.

Either of these edge rushers would be huge gets for the Jaguars.
