3-Team NFL Trade Idea Sends 49ers QB Mac Jones to Jets

A three-team NFL trade idea sending Mac Jones from the San Francisco 49ers to the New York Jets has been created by Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report.

Here is the mock trade:

Jets Get: QB Mac Jones

49ers Get: WR DK Metcalf

Pittsburgh Steelers Get: Jets' 2027 3rd-round pick, WR Brandon Aiyuk

The Jets acquired Geno Smith from the Las Vegas Raiders this offseason. Smith is slated to start for New York next season.

However, Knox believes Jones is better than Smith, who is currently being investigated for an incident in which a woman accused him of battery in Florida.

"The New York Jets, who are in a perpetual search for QB stability, should be very interested in taking a flier on Jones," Knox wrote. "They have three first-round selections in the 2027 draft, but those don't necessarily need to be spent on a quarterback. If a veteran like Jones could be New York's answer, those picks could be used to flesh out the roster instead."

Jones appeared in 11 games for the 49ers last season. He put up 2,151 passing yards and 13 passing touchdowns while going 5-3.

Jones was the 15th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He spent the first three years of his career with the New England Patriots. The Alabama product made the Pro Bowl as a rookie but struggled in Years 2 and 3.

After one season with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2024, Jones signed with the 49ers in the offseason of 2025. San Francisco gave Jones a two-year, $8.4 million contract.

In 63 NFL games with the Patriots, Jaguars and 49ers, Jones has 12,741 passing yards and 67 passing touchdowns. He's currently the No. 2 QB in San Francisco behind Brock Purdy.

Smith enters next season with 22,168 passing yards, 124 passing touchdowns and 89 career interceptions in the NFL. His starting record is 42-56-0. The veteran led the NFL in interceptions last season in Las Vegas.

Frank Reich is the new OC in New York, replacing Tanner Engstrand. Jones projects to run Reich's offense better than Smith.
