With the New York Jets obviously needing to figure out their quarterback situation after Tyrod Taylor went down, some have pondered the idea that Justin Fields could return to the starting lineup.
Fields didn’t do what he had to do during his time as the starting quarterback, which prompted the move to Taylor, but he might give the Jets their best opportunity to win a game right now, which Aaron Glenn clearly wants.
There have still been questions about what the Jets want to do in terms of winning games, but everything Glenn has said over the past few months suggests he isn’t worried about tanking. If anything, Glenn wants to win now and worry about draft picks later.
Regarding what he’s looking for over the next few days to determine who the Jets’ starting quarterback will be, Glenn said the same thing he has been saying for months: he wants to start the player who gives them the best chance to win.
“I’m interested in a quarterback that gives us the best chance to win,” Glenn said, per Newsday. “These guys are all professionals, and any time they have a chance to go out and perform with their teammates, that’s the only thing they’re thinking about.”
“Whichever quarterback that we have that’s ready to go, that guy will be ready to go.”
Fields missed Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins due to a knee injury he suffered earlier in the week during practice. Had he not been injured, he likely would have been in the game over Brady Cook, who struggled during his first NFL appearance.
Unfortunately for the Jets, there isn’t a perfect option at quarterback, which is a significant reason why this team hasn’t been what it has hoped to be over the past few years.
Cook's struggles were to be expected, but I'd even go as far as to say that he was worse than most would've imagined. Perhaps he gets another chance, but who knows?
The Jets will take on the Jacksonville Jaguars, New Orleans Saints, New England Patriots, and Buffalo Bills over the final four weeks of the regular season.
