Last season, outside of winning two games (which is by no means impressive), the New York Jets had one of the worst seasons of all time.
Offensively, they had incredibly uninspired QB play from Justin Fields, which led to their leading WR Garrett Wilson only amassing a measly 395 total yards. Defensively, they recorded one of the most embarrassing records in NFL history. They became the first team in league history to not record a single interception all year.
Clearly, when you look at last season for New York, the thought that comes to mind is, there's no way to go but up...right? So far through the early stages of free agency, that certainly seems to be the case.
The Jets have made many moves to this point, with a whopping 11 picks in the draft still yet to be selected. With two high-value first-round picks and many others littered throughout the draft, there's even more improvement for them on the horizon.
Kevin Cole with Unexpected Points has released a graph over the past few years that gives a good look at which teams have had the most improvement and biggest regression over the course of the offseason. On his list this season, the Jets are looking pretty solid.
As the tweet above says, this graph is composed by comparing the end-of-season roster point-differential projections to what those same projections would look like given the offseason changes.
Like the tweet also says, this isn't an exact measurement of who will be better or worse; last year's results certainly showed that. The top three teams? Bears, Patriots, and Panthers. The bottom three teams? Chiefs, Jets, and Eagles.
Now, after a blazing start to free agency, the Jets find themselves second on this list in terms of top teams.
Almost every single defensive player they've signed is projected to be a starter on defense, and they filled the massive gap they had at the quarterback position with Geno Smith returning to New York.
As I mentioned previously, for the New York Jets, there's no way to go but up.
