Cowboys Coach Sets the Record Straight on Jets' Aaron Glenn

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn is under fire, but Dallas Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer was tossed some water on the flames.

The New York Jets have gotten off to as dreadful of a start as you can imagine under first-year head coach Aaron Glenn, going 0-5 to begin the season and becoming the first NFL team to do so without recording a takeaway.

Glenn, a former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator, was supposed to take the Jets' defense — which was already elite — to the next level. Instead, New York's defense has plummeted to 23rd in the NFL and just surrendered 416 total yards to the Dallas Cowboys.

As expected, Glenn is now in the crosshairs, especially considering that he vowed to change the culture in the Meadowlands from the get-go. But Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer — who was New York's offensive coordinator the last time it made the playoffs 15 years ago — thinks everyone should cool it with Glenn.

“I’m a big Aaron Glenn fan. He’s going to build the right culture. He’s going to get his guys playing the right way," Schottenheimer said, via Ian O'Connor of The Athletic. "… I believe identity matters, and that’s what Aaron is going to find with this team. We had ground-and-pound and played great defense back then, and that was all Rex’s [Ryan] background from Baltimore."

The Jets actually do rank third in the NFL in rushing, so they are at least finding some success on the ground. Breece Hall is averaging 5.3 yards per carry, and Justin Fields has totaled 204 rushing yards in four games. But the defense — Glenn's supposed calling card — is another story.

“The biggest thing you’ve got to do is find an identity, and what’s hard is when you’re not winning. You want to win so the guys buy into what you’re doing," Schottenheimer added.

New York certainly has not done a whole lot of winning since Schottenheimer was fired following the 2011 campaign. The Jets have missed the playoffs 14 years in a row, representing the longest active streak in the NFL. They are well on their way to missing it for a 15th straight season.

In Glenn's defense, Gang Green has now employed six different coaches since last making the postseason. The result has been the same for all of them.

Perhaps the head coach isn't the problem. Glenn certainly isn't helping, though.
