Mark Sanchez is a well-known name for New York Jets fans. However, he has been in the national news this week after an altercation over the weekend ended with him being stabbed and now facing felony charges.
As shared by Marion County, Indiana, prosecutor Ryan Mears, the investigation into the matter has led to more serious charges for Sanchez. Prior to the felony chargers, Sanchez had been facing three misdemeanor charges.
One of the charges that Sanchez will be facing is a felony battery involving serious bodily injury charge, which carries a maximum sentence of anywhere from one to six years in prison.
Mears released a statement about the incident, sharing some preliminary details about what happened.
“You have the allegations of a 38-year-old man becoming involved in an altercation with a 69-year-old man who sustained significant, very severe injuries as a result of that altercation,” Mears said. “We are literally talking about people fighting over a parking space and/or a dispute about where people are parking, and it resulted in someone just incredibly significant injuries.”
Sanchez was in Indianapolis to call a Week 5 NFL game between the Indianapolis Colts and Las Vegas Raiders.
What was the altercation about? Sanchez was reportedly running in an Indianapolis alley near the downtown Marriott when he came across the 69-year-old man previously mentioned. The situation escalated from there.
Since the incident occurred, Sanchez has shared that he doesn't recall much and that he couldn't remember who stabbed him or where the situation unfolded.
At this point, there are very few facts known about the situation. More is sure to become available as the situation unfolds in court.
Indianapolis police chief Chris Bailey is simply thankful that no one died during the altercation.
“We’re lucky that no one’s dead right now as a result of this incident that involved a knife," Bailey said.
For now, the 69-year-old man is in the hospital with severe injuries and Sanchez, who was taken into the hospital in critical condition, is now stable.
As more information becomes available about the former Jets quarterback, we'll make sure to share that.
During his NFL career, Sanchez played in four seasons with New York. He holds career numbers of 15,357 passing yards, 86 touchdowns, and 89 interceptions.
