For a minute, it looked like the New York Jets had the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. Jets edge rusher Will McDonald blocked a field goal and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown late in the fourth quarter, giving New York a 27-26 lead.
The Jets had previously trailed 23-6 in the third period. They were down 26-13 at one point in the fourth. Were they seriously about to rally for a potential season-changing win?
Not so fast. Baker Mayfield proceeded to march the Buccaneers down the field to put them in position to kick another game-deciding field goal, and this time, Chase McLaughlin converted from 36 yards out to give Tampa Bay a 29-27 victory.
It was a gut-wrenching loss for the Jets, and after the game, wide receiver Garrett Wilson posed a question that New York doesn't seem to have the answer to right now.
“You’re 0-3. It’s an uphill battle as far as where we’re at,” Wilson said, via Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic. “But it’s still early. We finished strong, but how do we keep ourselves out of that spot?”
In other words, how do the Jets hold on in games in which they grab a lead?
That wasn't a problem in Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills, when New York was hammered right out of the gate in a 30-10 loss, but Gang Green encountered similar issues in its season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers, when the Jets blew multiple leads before falling 34-32.
Wilson himself had 10 catches for 84 yards and a touchdown on Sunday, but averaging just 8.4 yards per grab isn't going to cut it. Not for one of the most gifted receivers in football.
The 25-year-old has hauled in 21 receptions for 229 yards and a couple of scores through three weeks, but while his catch rate (70 percent) is nice, his inability to explode for big plays thus far has been problematic.
Perhaps it's New York's quarterback situation, or maybe there really is more Wilson can do to shake himself free for chunk plays. But that is far from the Jets' only problem.
New York will have a great opportunity to collect its first win against the Miami Dolphins next Monday. We'll see if the Jets can take advantage.
