The Jets QB knows this is a big game, but there's no reason to add any pressure.
The New York Jets seem to have a bit more hype than they typically do entering Week 2 against the Green Bay Packers at home.
This will be an interesting game for the Jets, as one could argue that winning would be the most positive sign the organization has shown us over the past couple of years.
While the Jets have had some decent moments here and there, beating a Green Bay team that many consider to be a Super Bowl contender would be an awesome sign. The line opened at 6.5, but the Jets are now just three-and-a-half-point underdogs, showing that some people at least have some level of respect for them.
As for how they feel in this game, the Jets aren't trying to put too much pressure on themselves.
They understand this is a game they really want to win, and rightfully so. However, instead of worrying about it, quarterback Geno Smith knows that he just has to come out, play the best football he can, and try to get a win for this fan base.
"I'm just looking forward to another opponent, to compete with the guys and try to win another game," Smith said. "We all have a 1-0 mindset. We're preparing to go out in front of our fans and put on a good show."
"We'll see," he said about whether a win over the Packers would be a statement game for these Jets, per the team. "It's up to us to go out and compete and get it done. It's just another game. It's the most important game because it's the next game. We've got to stay focused on this day-to-day process, not worry about what's said on the outside. It's a consistent, never-ending mindset. and as long as we have that, we'll be fine."
I really like what Smith has said over the past couple of months, and it's part of why I have a lot of trust in this Jets team to be one of the more above-average teams in the NFL. I'm not going to sit here and say the Jets are going to win seven to nine-plus games, but I think they can be a team that competes every single week.
This game against the Packers will ultimately show us a lot, so I'm really excited to see what it looks like.
