The New York Jets announced major quarterback news.

The New York Jets announced major quarterback news on Saturday.

The Jets, who are 0-7, will start Justin Fields on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Tyrod Taylor was supposed to start, but he's dealing with a knee injury.

Fields, who was benched at halftime last week against the Carolina Panthers, has thrown for 845 yards and four touchdowns this season. He's also rushed for 257 yards and three touchdowns.

The Jets signed the former Chicago Bears star to a two-year, $40 million contract in the offseason. Fields played for the Pittsburgh Steelers last season. He started six games before getting benched for Russell Wilson.

All signs point toward NYJ trading or cutting Fields this offseason unless he magically turns around his play. He may never be a starter in the NFL again.

Fields has 49 passing touchdowns and 22 rushing touchdowns in the NFL with the Bears, Steelers and Jets. He is 14-36-0 as a starter.

Jets owner Woody Johnson took a big shot at Fields while speaking to reporters at the NFL's Fall League Meeting in New York on Tuesday. Here's what Johnson said about Fields:

"You know, it's hard when you have a quarterback with a rating that we've got. He has ability, but something is just not jiving. But if you look at any head coach with a quarterback like that, you're going to see similar results across the league. You have to play consistently at that position, and that's what we're going to try to do. ... I just think defense, special teams are doing better. Defense is pretty good. If we could just complete a pass, it would look good. We got to complete some passes."

Fields spoke to reporters and he was asked about Johnson's comments.

"I'm not on social media," Fields said. "It doesn't bother me. It doesn't. Of course, everybody knows I need to play better. We need to play better as a team. And, of course, no matter how the offense does as a unit, I'm gonna get the blame. And I understand that. That's just what comes with the job.

"But honestly, it's what comes with it. So you can't let anything kind of affect your mind, my mind, and that's what it is."

The Jets will miss the playoffs again this season. They will likely get the first pick in the 2026 NFL Draft and select a QB.
