It was 2nd and 17 at the Browns' 42-yard line and the rain was coming down hard at MetLife Stadium in the fourth quarter.
The Jets had the ball and were tied with the Browns at 17. There aren't many good plays to call at 2nd and 17, especially for the Jets, who have one of the worst throwing quarterbacks in the NFL in Justin Fields.
However, Jets OC Tanner Engstrand called the perfect play for once and it was a screen pass to Breece Hall, who caught the ball from Fields and took it all the way to the endzone.
"They like to blitz the back a lot and either a linebacker or a safety will take the running back man," Hall said. "If the running back stays in, then he'll just add into the blitz as well. [OC Tanner Engstrand] called a play, and I knew I was getting the ball. Once I ran out there, I was like, 'Okay, I think if the right guard gets the blitzer, it's going to be a big one."
Hall had zero touchdowns before the Bengals game in Week 8. He now has three touchdowns on the season and one passing TD.
"I was like, 'Okay if Joe gets him, just gets a little piece of him, it's going to be a big play,'" Hall said. "I know Joe ended up being athletic enough to get out there and get a piece of him and we got guys blocking downfield which that springs a big run. That was cool to experience that with the whole team."
The Jets improved to 2-7 after beating the Browns by a final score of 27-20.
Many people around the NFL thought New York would trade Hall at the trade deadline, but the franchise decided to keep the talented playmaker, who got a message from head coach Aaron Glenn during the Browns game.
"He came to me and said I'm going to feed you," Hall said. "You're going to be the biggest factor in this game, so just go be you. We ended up running the ball a lot in the second half and effectively and were able to get the win."
Hall has 664 rushing yards, two rushing touchdowns, 220 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown on the season. He's one of the most versatile backs in the NFL and the Jets would be wise to give him an extension this offseason.
