Given this is now year five for Garrett Wilson with the New York Jets after being selected in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft at 10th overall, it almost feels safe to say that Wilson and the Jets are never going to have a perfect quarterback under center unless they eventually figure something out over the next decade.
At this point, history suggests the Jets just won't surround him with an elite quarterback, and that's a problem in itself.
While Wilson hasn't had the best quarterback luck in the NFL, there are a couple of ways to look at it.
For one, he still has the opportunity to put up big numbers, and he has done just that much of his career. In every season when Wilson has been healthy and played 17 games, he's a 1,000-plus-yard receiver.
However, the scary part and the harsh reality is that if the Jets surrounded him with a superstar-level quarterback, we could be looking at a guy who can put up 1,500 yards in his sleep.
Wilson is as good as any receiver in this league, and not having a star-level quarterback next to him does the entire organization a disservice. The stats that were recently brought up make it even more jarring just how bad things have been.
“The Jets haven’t made it easy on him, but he’s produced anyway. Just look at the list of wide receivers with the most receptions since 2022: Wilson is tied for ninth with Puka Nacua (with 350) during that span. He’s caught passes from 10 quarterbacks — a list that includes such names as Zach Wilson, Justin Fields, Trevor Siemian and Tim Boyle — and played for five offensive play callers.
“On that top-10 list, only Michael Pittman (Indianapolis Colts and Pittsburgh Steelers) has caught passes from that many quarterbacks. Only Davante Adams (Las Vegas Raiders, Jets, Los Angeles Rams) has played for that many play callers,” Zack Rosenblatt wrote.
It's hard to blame Wilson for any of this, but it's also just the reality of what he has to deal with. I'm curious to see if this eventually frustrates him enough to ask out, but he doesn't feel like that type of guy. At the same time, Wilson wants to win games.
It's not even the number of quarterbacks he's played with, but more so the quality of them. None have been elite by any means, even Aaron Rodgers, due to his age.
The Jets also have a ton of assets this offseason to make the necessary moves to ensure they land the quarterback Wilson and the team need.
