The New York Jets, after trading Sauce Gardner in a deal with the Indianapolis Colts, also sit at No. 16 in the upcoming draft. For months, one of the biggest questions with that pick has been whether the Jets will take a chance on a quarterback. While it makes sense to do so, it doesn’t sound like New York plans to go in that direction.
According to Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic, the Jets are more likely to stay away from Ty Simpson. The idea would be for the Jets to take a chance on a potential star. However, Rosenblatt believes the team isn’t in a position to do so and will pass because of it.
"I feel pretty confident he won't be their No. 16 pick," Rosenblatt said. "I could be wrong, I just don't see how any team could draft him that high. ... [No. 33] is where it gets interesting if he falls that far...
"I do think the Jets are not going to draft somebody who is that much of a wild card that early. I just don't think this regime can afford to do that. Like, if you're the Eagles or you're the, I don't know, the Rams. Or one of these teams that can like afford to like take a flyer on a guy that. You do it. But I just don't think the Jets are that team."
Rosenblatt brings up a fair point here and one that I’ve considered. Despite the idea making sense for New York on paper, how can we trust this team to develop a quarterback?
Mike Tannenbaum doesn’t think it’s an issue and urged the Jets to do so, but it doesn’t sound like New York plans to go in that direction.
“Ty Simpson who can now sit for a year behind Geno Smith,” Tannenbaum said on the broadcast, per PFN.
“Now you have five years, you have that critical fifth-year option.” “Imagine if you’re the New York Jets and you get a pass rusher, let’s say a corner, Ty Simpson, and now you still have three first-round picks next year. I think that’s a dream scenario for Ty Simpson who could sit.”
