The New York Jets have been given an eye-opening landing spot in the new Week 1 NFL power rankings.
The New York Jets don't seem to have much hope for the upcoming NFL season.
After winning just three games a year ago, New York once again isn't expected to compete for a postseason spot. This team has some talent on it, but overall, 2026 could be another tough year all around.
The Jets haven't made the playoffs since the 2010 season, giving them the longest active playoff drought in North America. It's been a brutal decade-plus for this franchise, and this coming year isn't expected to alleviate anything for the fanbase.
With Geno Smith being the starting quarterback, New York still doesn't have a long-term answer at the position. But if there is any silver lining to 2026 for the Jets, it's that they may get a top draft pick in the quarterback-heavy 2027 NFL Draft class.
But for now, all the team can do is hope for the best coming into this season.
NFL analyst Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report worked with a few other people to rank teams heading into the new season. Within it, the Jets came in at No. 29, showing little hope for the upcoming year.
"The Jets are a franchise stuck in limbo—and it's partly of their own doing...however, the Jets have also been reluctant to fully embrace a rebuild. The addition of veteran quarterback Geno Smith is unlikely to get them into the playoffs or deliver their first winning season since 2015. The Jets have enough talent on both sides of the ball to win 5-6 games with competent quarterback play—and all that will do is make it that much harder to draft an elite quarterback prospect in 2027 without moving up," Davenport wrote.
Head coach Aaron Glenn enters his second season with the team, and there has already been talk about him being on the hot seat. Glenn was seen as a strong hire for the Jets last offseason, but his first year left a lot to be desired on both sides of the ball.
Glenn may not be coaching for his job, but the team does need to show some type of improvement this year. If they can't, Glenn could be looking for another opportunity just as fast as he got this job.
2026 is all about building for the future of the Jets organization, with the coaching staff and front office trying to figure out the long-term plan. But in the meantime, New York could have another long season ahead of them.
