Yesterday in London against the Denver Broncos, the Jets made one of the most mind-boggling decisions that we’ve seen in recent memory.
Towards the end of the first half, the Jets were sitting on 4th and 1 with 1:48 left in the half.
But in a shrewd move, coach Aaron Glenn decided to go for a fake punt, which ultimately it converted.
After that? Who knows what really happened.
New York then runs the ball, quarterback Justin Fields gets sacked, the Jets call time out, and then Fields completes a six yard pass, and then… Well, it’s probably better to just show you.
As you can imagine, Jets fans are beside themselves. Six games into the Glenn era, there’s not much to show other than an 0-6 record and some are already calling for Glenn’s job.
It’s New York. One day the fans will berate you if you keep losing, but once you give them a winner, they’ll build you a statue.
That’s what you sign up for when you come here. A whole lot of pressure, and an unforgiving fanbase.
Glenn knows this is all a bad look. Who wouldn’t? But in the end, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and this is all a process to achieve something bigger.
He even looked to NFL royalty for a little bit of guidance.
“I know everybody wants to win but no one wants to go through the hard stuff. That is what we are going through right now. We are going through the hard times that’ll put ourselves in positions to win. I have all the confidence in the world in this team, I have all the confidence in the world in these coaches, & I have confidence in myself & I’m not going to waver one bit.
“There’s a number of coaches I’ve talked with that have been in this situation. I talked to [Hall of Famer] Bill [Parcells] this morning, hell, I think in 1993/94 he started 1-12, hell we beat them 45-0 at that time when I was here with the Jets. So you have to go through these times.”
Not only that, Glenn mentioned that he’s been through these issues with both the Detroit Lions and the New Orleans Saints.
If you remember, Glenn was the Defensive Coordinator for the 2021 Lions team that started the season 0-10-1, and ultimately after a year, the Lions went 9-8, and then proceeded to 12-5 to reach the NFC Conference Finals.
It is true that in order to succeed, you have to fail. And the Jets have done nothing but fail since 2011, nor is their roster built to succeed right now.
Understandably so, Gang Green is growing impatient but if the Jets are going to get to the promised land, they have to see Glenn’s vision through.
