When the New York Jets signed Justin Fields to a two-year contract in free agency, no one really expected that he would be their franchise quarterback moving forward.
Two weeks into Fields' tenure with the Jets, that seems even more obvious after he went 3-for-11 with 27 yards in a loss to the Buffalo Bills last Sunday. Fields exited with a concussion in the fourth quarter, but even before that, he was playing some of the worst football you could imagine from a signal-caller.
Fields has had his moments throughout his NFL career, but that's the problem: he has only had moments. He hasn't been consistent, and there is a reason why he is now on his third NFL team in five seasons.
As a result, New York will almost certainly be looking for a quarterback in next year's NFL Draft, and Bleacher Report's NFL Scouting Department has identified a potential answer: South Carolina Gamecocks star LaNorris Sellers.
"Offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand is currently making things work the best he can with Justin Fields and Tyrod Taylor, but he is missing the pocket presence and arm of Jared Goff. The Jets could get the best of both worlds with LaNorris Sellers in next year's class. He's a 6'3", 240-pound athlete, but the ball also comes out of his hand with special velocity," Bleacher Report wrote.
Sellers entered his junior campaign viewed as a top Heisman Trophy candidate, although he has been a bit disappointing thus far.
Through his first three games in 2025, Sellers has thrown for 431 yards, a couple of touchdowns and an interception while rushing for 45 yards and a score on just 1.9 yards per carry. It should be noted, however, that he left South Carolina's loss to Vanderbilt in the second quarter last week with a head injury.
The 20-year-old arrived at South Carolina in 2023 and became the full-time starter under center last year, finishing with 2,534 yards, 18 touchdowns and seven picks while adding 674 yards and seven scores as a rusher, logging 4.1 yards per attempt.
In spite of Sellers' slow start in 2025, there are some who view the dynamic prospect as the top quarterback in the 2026 draft class.
We'll see if the Jets turn their attention to the Florence, S.C. native as the year progresses.
