The New York Jets know that if they want to compete in the near future, finding the best players in the world through the draft ranks will be a significant reason why. Among the college programs that do nothing but produce high level NFL players, Ohio State is at the top of the list.
Among the top players at Ohio State this season, Arvell Reese is viewed as No. 1. Reese, incredible at getting off the edge, would be an A+ pick for the Jets with the second pick.
As FanSided’s Derek Praschak put it, Jets fans know the name, and he’s certainly someone they were watching at Ohio State’s Pro Day.
“We all know this name by now. And if you don't, you should. Of all the players discussed as potential options for the Jets with the number two overall pick, he has been mocked to New York more than anyone. Outside of Demario Davis, the Jets' linebacker position is abysmal. Unless you believe Kiko Mauigoa is about to transform into a starting-level talent overnight, they are going to need better outside linebackers to trot out. And Reese is one who can actually make a significant impact...
“At 6-foot-4, 240 pounds, Reese is a large man. And he uses his size and athletic ability to provide versatility. Sure, you can consider him an edge rusher. But he also boasted an 86.5 Pro Football Focus run defense grade last season, along with an 85.6 tackling grade. He isn't a linebacker who will generate some pressure externally and leave it at that. This is a complete player who can make an impact in any context,” he wrote.
Reese spoke about his meeting with the Jets at the combine and had good things to say about the staff.
"That meeting was a lot of, they installed something and wanted to see where my head was at," he said. "I think that's a serious organization. I respect the guys I met with, I respect that room, for sure." "That'd be amazing. Just getting a chance in the NFL would be amazing."
If the Jets are serious about fixing one of the weakest spots on their roster, this is one of the easier picks to make. I hate to throw a label on a young man, but Reese looks like a star and should have a long and successful NFL career.
