Jets Lose Important Running Back; May Land on IR cover image

When Jets running back Braelon Allen went down and immediately left Monday night’s game, there was immediate concern among the organization.

Luckily for both, it’s not the worst injury in the world. Allen suffered a sprained MCL that may end up landing the second year player out of Wisconsin on injured reserve.

Before he lands on IR though, Allen wants to get a second opinion before he misses a guaranteed four games.

Allen has handled being Breece Hall’s backup very well, and has proven to be one of the more versatile running backs in the game with his enormous 235 pound frame.

Despite fumbling in the endzone on Monday night, Allen was actually having one of the better games of the season.

He rushed four times for 26 yards and 6.5 yards per carry including a 15-yard run before getting hit low on a kickoff return from former Jet Ashtyn Davis.

New York’s running back room was one of the deeper rooms in the NFL. There was a big emphasis on running the ball from the start of the season, especially with a run-heavy quarterback in Justin Fields.

Breece Hall, the fourth year back continues to lead the charge as the lead running back, but there was a tantalizing possibility of having them both as a duo.

For the most part this season, that has been underwhelming.

Hall had a spectacular game in Week 1, a poor outing in Weeks 2 and 3, and then showed back up this past Monday with an 81 yard outing.

Coach Aaron Glenn will likely have to lean on him more, as he’s also the Jets second leading receiver behind Garrett Wilson.

Behind Allen is now Isaiah Davis, the 2024 fifth round pick out of South Dakota State has been strong in limited carries. In his rookie year as a third string running back, Davis ran 30 times for 174 yards and 5.8 yards per carry.

So far, this season, he’s only hauled in five carries, but made the most of it on 27 yards.

We should expect Hall to continue to be the bellcow back, but anytime he needs a break, then Davis will be the guy to come in relief.

The Jets’ next game will be on Sunday, October 5th at 1:00 p.m. ET against the Dallas Cowboys, airing on FOX.
