While I expected the New York Jets to go with Arvell Reese with the second overall pick, that wasn't the case. Instead, New York decided to add to its defensive room by making another impressive decision, taking David Bailey second overall. Bailey, one of the top defensive prospects in this class, certainly has an opportunity to be a cornerstone for this organization for a very long time.

The Jets have drafted in the top five plenty throughout their existence, especially over the past decade or so. However, according to USA Today's Geoffrey Knox, there was actually some significance and history in this pick. According to the USA Today writer, Bailey is the first player the Jets have taken second overall in the modern era who plays on the defensive side of the football.

"The secret everyone thought they knew has finally been confirmed. The New York Jets have selected David Bailey with the second overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. It may not qualify as a stunning development, but it does represent something noteworthy for a franchise that doesn’t often operate this way. This isn’t just another high pick. It’s history.

"David Bailey is the first player taken second overall by the Jets in the modern draft era. This marks the fifth time the Jets have selected second overall, and for the first time, they’ve used that pick on a defensive player. That alone makes this selection significant. For decades, when New York has found itself in this position, the instinct has been to lean offense," he wrote.

In the grand scheme of things, this is relatively small history, but hopefully, this isn't the only history that Bailey will make in New York. The Jets need him to be just as good as any player on this roster, and he has all the tools to be just that.

If Reese ends up being a better player than him, there will be a lot of questions about why New York went in that direction. However, it decided to do what it did, and all we can hope for now is that everything works out as well as the Jets clearly think it did in this big moment.
