The New York Jets have caught a huge break ahead of Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills.
The New York Jets will be faced with another huge challenge on Sunday when they play host to the Buffalo Bills, but one key injury could open the door for Justin Fields and company to thrive once again on offense.
Bills head coach Sean McDermott announced Friday that interior defensive lineman Ed Oliver will not play in Sunday's tilt after a ankle injury landed him in a walking boot.
Oliver's value to this Bills defense can't be overstated. The seventh-year man was graded 19th of 118 players at his position last season by Pro Football Focus, and finished Week 1 as the top interior lineman.
He forced a fumble against Derrick Henry and recorded six tackles in all, with three coming behind the line of scrimmage including a sack.
New York's offensive line is coming off an excellent performance against arguably the strongest defensive line in football, even with Alijah Vera-Tucker lost for the season, and the team as a whole graded out as the second-best offense last week according to PFF.
As a defensive tackle, Oliver's contributions are mainly concentrated to his ability to stop the run. He recorded three stuffs last week against a hard-nosed Ravens rushing attack to help flip the game on its head, and now with Larry Ogunjobi suspended and DeWayne Carter injured for Buffalo, it will have to reach deep down its depth chart for help.
New York's passing attack shined in Week 1 while the run game was solid, albeit unspectacular. This opens the door for the Jets' line to get some push up front and free up Fields, Breece Hall and Braelon Allen to have some big games.
It will be interesting to see what Week 2 looks like for the Jets. After a disappointing season opening loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, being able to bounce back and defeat the Bills would be a huge step in the right direction for the team.
