The New York Jets have made a deal with the reigning champion Philadelphia Eagles.

The New York Jets have made a move ahead of the trade deadline, sending cornerback Michael Carter II and a 2027 seventh-round pick to the Philadelphia Eagles for wide receiver John Metchie III and a 2027 sixth-round pick.

The Jets, at 1-7, had been shopping Carter II after acquiring cornerback Jarvis Brownlee Jr. from the Tennessee Titans.

Carter II made it clear that he wanted to be moved to the Eagles, as he agreed to take out the $5 million guaranteed for injury in his 2026 contract year to make the trade go through.

Former Jets general manager Joe Douglas drafted Carter II and now reunites with him in Philadelphia, as he's working in their front office.

This deal won't have a major impact for New York, but it moves them up a round in the 2027 NFL Draft and gives them an intriguing young wide receiver in Metchie III.

Metchie III hasn't had much of an impact in the 2025 season, with just four receptions for 18 yards. However, he showed flashes with the Houston Texans, hauling in 40 receptions for 412 yards and a touchdown across two seasons.

He did return seven kicks with the Eagles for 120 yards.

New York is in need of wide receiver depth, as they don't have a clear second or third option behind Garrett Wilson.

Wilson has solidified himself as a premier wide receiver, with over 1,000 yards in each of his first three seasons. The 25-year-old inked a four-year $130 million contract extension this offseason, tying him to the franchise through the 2030 season.

One of New York's major issues is finding a reliable target for its quarterback outside of Wilson. Rookie tight end Mason Taylor has been solid, but they could use more weapons.

Metchie III likely won't be the solution for the Jets, but he could become a solid contributor in a bigger role.

New York has also had their share of quarterback problems, with Justin Fields in his first year with the team. The Jets are still far away from contending, but adding a young wide receiver and moving up a round in the 2027 NFL Draft is a solid move ahead of the trade deadline.
