The New York Jets have a brilliant opportunity to improve their roster this offseason, as they are armed with $74 million in cap space and possess four picks in the first two rounds of the NFL Draft.
And as far as the latter is concerned, the Jets just received a pretty significant update.
Not only does New York own a collection of first and second-round selections, but it also has a bunch of extra Day 3 capital thanks to compensatory picks.
The Jets have long been projected to own two additional fifth-rounders as well as a couple of extra seventh-rounders due to D.J. Reed, Morgan Moses, Solomon Thomas and Tyler Conklin all signing elsewhere last offseason, but they just landed some major news in that department.
Reed was initially expected to bag New York a Round 5 pick, but now, Over the Cap is projecting that the Jets will reap a fourth-round selection instead.
This is very consequential for Gang Green, as it gives the team more ammunition in potential trades as well as just a better draft pick in general to land a better player.

But if the Jets do ultimately end up getting that additional fourth-rounder, they could possibly move up into Round 3.
There are plenty of reasons to be excited about New York this spring. The Jets will have the opportunity to get pretty busy in free agency, and they will be picking No. 2 overall in the NFL Draft next month.
Of course, just because New York has cap room does not necessarily mean it will land the very best free agents. It will be difficult for the Jets to convince the top players to sign with them. But they should at least be able to do something.
General manager Darren Mougey has done a tremendous job putting this team in a position to have a big offseason, so New York fans should also have every reason to trust that he will make the right moves in the coming weeks.
The legal tampering period for NFL free agency opens on Monday.
