Aaron Glenn did the right thing on Sunday when he benched Justin Fields.
While the game was seemingly already out of hand, considering how poorly the Jets' offense has looked for much of the year and being any points behind would be a tough thing to come back from at this stage, he had to make the move.
Fields isn’t playing the type of football that he was expected to when entering the season, despite the many question marks that many had for him.
Fields has never proven throughout his NFL career to be an elite talent, so it's a bit questionable that the Jets ever expected him to come in and really do too much. There are a few issues with Fields and the Jets, but the simple fact of the matter here is that they don't trust him to throw the football, and when that's the case with an NFL quarterback, they can't play.
The only winless team in the NFL, the Jets have plenty of questions to answer over the next few weeks.
If they want to continue to lose games, it might not be a bad idea to keep everything the same. However, considering Glenn has to hear the noise already about his job security, it looks like he might go with Tyrod Taylor for the future.
Regardless of whether he starts Fields or Taylor in the future, if one thing is for certain, it's the fact that the Jets don't have a franchise quarterback. According to The Athletic, the Jets are lost on the situation, and understand that their quarterback is playing in college right now.
“The Jets are losing, and they feel lost. They don’t have a quarterback for now, or one for later. Their quarterback of the future is playing on a college football team somewhere, maybe in Indiana, or Oregon, or South Carolina. Whoever he is, wherever he is, he should enjoy these last moments of prosperity and adulation while he still can.
“Soon, he’ll be given an impossible task: Jets savior. The weight of an organization mired in despair will fall on his throwing shoulder. He’s the only hope the Jets have, the only hope the Jets ever have: the next quarterback,” Zack Rosenblatt wrote.
It's impossible to say that any college quarterback has been too great. Mendoza out of Indiana looks decent, Moore of Oregon looks pretty good, and perhaps Sellers could be something, but he also has a lot to develop.
It's tough to suggest that this current Jets regime should be trusted to develop a quarterback.
