While the New York Jets seem to have a quarterback situation that is far from figured out in the long term, there seems to be an obvious answer in the short term. After making a deal for veteran quarterback Geno Smith, reuniting him with the team that drafted him many years ago, he seems like the likeliest starting quarterback, barring something drastic happening.
Even with some other decisions that have been made in New York, including a draft pick of Cade Klubnik out of Clemson, there have been questions about what New York might do at the position outside of that.
One of those possibilities is bringing in Russell Wilson, a longtime veteran who is in a different part of his career at the moment. Wilson, obviously not what he used to be, would really just be a guy to be in the clubhouse and be a veteran. According to the latest, it sounds like there's not much of a chance that Wilson wins a job in New York, even if the Jets go that direction.
“Coach Aaron Glenn has made it clear that Geno Smith, 35, acquired in a March trade with the Las Vegas Raiders, is the starting quarterback. The Jets don't have an experienced backup. The other quarterbacks on the roster are Bailey Zappe (4-5 as a starter), Brady Cook (0-4) and rookie Cade Klubnik, drafted in the fourth round Saturday.
“Smith advocated for Wilson when team officials solicited his input on potential backups, the source said. The two developed a good relationship as Seattle Seahawks teammates in 2020 and 2021. In those seasons, Smith served as Wilson's backup before ascending to the No. 1 job in 2022, the year Wilson was traded to the Denver Broncos. At the time, Jets general manager Darren Mougey was a member of the Broncos' front office. Mougey, Glenn and offensive coordinator Frank Reich met with Wilson on Monday,” Rich Cimini of ESPN wrote.
This shouldn't come as much of a surprise to anybody, as there's no real reason for New York to give him an opportunity to win a starting job. Everybody knows what Wilson is at this stage of his career, and that isn't a starting-caliber quarterback for a team that's looking to win some games.
