It wouldn't make much sense.

The past three weeks have shown us that the New York Jets can certainly improve on both sides of the football, but there are more areas that are pressing needs than others.

As for the quarterback position, it doesn't seem to be at the top of the priority list anymore.

The Jets don't have an excellent quarterback in Geno Smith, but he's above average, especially if he continues to play as he has over the first three weeks of the season.

There's plenty that needs to continue for the veteran quarterback for him to be this guy, but the early signs have been promising. It'll be interesting to see if Smith can keep playing at this level, but it doesn't feel like others think he can. That includes Bleacher Report, which recently suggested that the Jets should go out and trade for a quarterback.

It wouldn't just be another veteran backup either, as the Jets would have to move on from legitimate draft capital to land said player. The player they mentioned was Mac Jones of the San Francisco 49ers.

“Brock Purdy is playing like an MVP candidate, but he did miss eight games a season ago. Jones went 5-3 as the starter in those games and kept San Francisco on a playoff trajectory. Obviously, the 49ers aren't planning to lose Purdy to injury again, but they've already seen injuries mount at other positions this season. Prying Jones away from San Francisco won't be cheap.

“That said, the 49ers were open to moving Jones for a second-round pick in the spring, according to The Athletic's Zack Rosenblatt, and they're likely to lose him in 2027 free agency. He also remains the top target for any contenders that lose their starter before November 10 or those simply looking to get a jump on next year's free-agent QB class. Potential Suitors: Arizona Cardinals, New York Jets,” Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report wrote.

Jones is a strong option as a potential quarterback for the Jets over the next couple of years, though it's also fair to note that when he's been a starter throughout his career, he hasn't been great.

He does feel like a guy who's better served as a backup, and there's no problem with that. The problem is that the 49ers are looking for second or third-round draft capital, which the Jets frankly shouldn't even consider moving for a guy who isn't a guaranteed starter.
