According to NFL Insider, Tom Pelissero, this time, it’s former All-Pro linebacker Quincy Williams who suffered a shoulder injury during Sunday’s loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Pelissero reported that Williams will have to head to the Injured Reserve list, though it doesn’t seem to be season-ending. Regardless, New York will be without one of its top defenders for the foreseeable future.
Due to Williams going down, the Jets signed linebacker Mark Robinson off the New England Patriots’ practice squad.
Prior to landing in New England, Robinson spent the past three seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he played in every game in the past two.
Robinson’s best season was in 2023, where he started in two games and generated 30 total tackles, one tackle for loss, and a sack.
When Pittsburgh decided to move on from him at the end of the 2025 training camp, the former seventh rounder signed to the Patriots where he went to the practice squad. There, he was able to play in the first three games, but with limited action.
Signing Robinson also indicates that perhaps the Jets aren’t crazy about the linebackers they have rostered on their practice squad.
Jackson Sirmon has been on the Jets since last May and hasn’t played a single game yet, and Mykal Walker is a five year veteran who signed onto the Jets’ practice squad at the beginning of September.
Williams was on his way to having another stellar season, already racking up 1.5 sacks on 15 total tackles.
The loss is just another injury to a team that can’t seem to get healthy. The Jets are already missing Jermaine Johnson, Tony Adams, and Williams’ backup Marcelino McCrary-Ball who's on IR as well, which forced their hand in signing Robinson. And not only that, they escaped missing their star cornerback Sauce Gardner, who had suffered a head injury on Sunday.
Williams is also a quality run-stopper, who posted a career-high 74.3 PFF run-stopping grade in the 2024 season.
New York has done an OK job at stopping the run, but now that it lost one of its top run stoppers, that could change.
The next few games, it plays the Dolphins, Cowboys, and Broncos, all who have solid run games. The next three weeks will be pivotal to how the Jets stop the run.
The game against Miami will be on Monday Night Football, with a kickoff at 7:15 p.m. ET, broadcasting on ESPN.
