There are a few things I would like to see the New York Jets do during the NFL Draft, and with just days left, we should get a pretty good idea of what could happen. The Jets certainly have some tough decisions to make, but that doesn’t mean all of them will be addressed in this draft.
Unfortunately, the draft doesn’t give a team a chance to address all its needs, but that doesn’t mean New York can’t do what’s needed and get better on both sides of the ball. Of course, a lot of the talk about the Jets is what they’re going to do in the draft and if they’ll find a quarterback, but there are other things that are just as important on the offensive side of the football.
One of those areas is improving the wide receiver room, something that’s unfortunately been said far too many times for the Jets in the past few years. While it looks like it will be an area where the Jets look to improve, it still remains uncertain what’s going to happen. When looking at that recently, some believe it’s the second-biggest need on the roster outside of a quarterback.
"To me, it's [wide receiver] the second-biggest need on the roster," ESPN's Field Yates told senior reporter Eric Allen on the "Now Boarding" feature. "Take a little bit of the pressure off of Garrett Wilson. We saw some flashes from [Adonai] AD Mitchell last year. There have been players that have had their moments for the Jets at wide receiver over the past few seasons.
"But we're looking for something sticky, or something that can be a legitimate building block, and with Garrett entrenched as your No. 1 wide receiver and a very good player, obviously as well, the question that the front office and the coaching staff has to evaluate is, is there a specific type of wide receiver if they're looking to complement Garrett Wilson.”
Don’t get me wrong, if somebody like Jordyn Tyson is there for the Jets at 16, though it might be a bit unlikely, I’d like to see New York go in that direction.
However, I also think it’s fair to suggest that the Jets would be better off going after somebody on the defensive side of the football. In the event that somebody like Caleb Downs somehow falls to 16, I could totally see New York going in that direction. However, it doesn’t seem very likely that this is how things will play out, so the Jets will likely have to go with somebody like Omar Cooper out of Indiana.
Regardless, the Jets should feel pretty good about where they sit right now, because they have multiple draft picks and ways to improve this roster in areas that need to be improved.
